A rally against Gainesville's 'Old Joe' and Confederate Memorial Day

Emotions flare in downtown Gainesville as protesters squared off in front of the controversial confederate statue. The push to remove the statue continues in a rally opposing "Confederate Memorial Day". Citizens joined members of the Alachua County Peace Coalition protesting what was supposed to be a Confederate Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony.

While Florida recognizes April as confederate history month--a statue sculpted for Gainesville in 1904 continues to be a subject of intense debate.

Alachua County Commissioners have yet to make a decision on the future of 'Old Joe' --but say they look to weigh in on the issue in late May.
