Alachua County Public School prioritizing equity with new position
As students register for school and teachers prepare their classrooms for the new year, Valerie Freeman is stepping into a new role- to tackle educational equity.
Equity - a district priority but the first time Alachua County Public Schools have dedicated a position solely focused on outreach.
"(We're) talking about some of the practice we can assist teachers with professional development", Freeman says. "To be able to achieve a success level for all students. No matter what cultural or racial kinds of restrictions may be present."
Freeman has more than 26 years in education and says she understands the community, going back to her father representing the county as superintendent. CBS4 's Brooke Rayford sat with Freeman, the first Director of Education Equity and Outreach as she steps into the new role.
