City bans some weapons from downtown Gainesville on eve of Richard Spencer event
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WGFL) - An emergency order issued by the City of Gainesville Wednesday banned certain weapons from downtown until 11:30 p.m.
The order cites Section 790.001(13), which defines a weapon as "any dirk, knife, metallic knuckles, slungshot, billie, tear gas gun, chemical weapon or device, or other deadly weapon except a firearm or a common pocketknife, plastic knife, or blunt-bladed table knife."
The order specifically mentions shields, bats and clubs but does not include guns. Anyone who violates the order can be arrested and charged with a second-degree misdemeanor.
The area described in the order is pictured above.
The order says it's necessary to ensure public safety. Police declined to say why they chose Wednesday night to initiate the ban.
