City working on projects to improve East Gainesville
Gainesville, Fla. —
Big changes are coming to East Gainesville -- city officials say they are working on major projects that will transform the area.
Driving through east Gainesville you'll see a lot of construction and its all a part of the transforming east Gainesville initiative. With the recent opening of Depot Park, city officials are hopeful that improvements to the South Main Street corridor will increase vehicle and pedestrian safety and attract more business to the area.
“Improving the ride of the roads and increasing the amenities in that area which hopefully in return will help increase property values and draw businesses as well as residents to the east side," City of Gainesville spokesman Chip Skinner said.
The project includes widening sidewalks, increasing the number of pedestrian crosswalks and enhancing bike facilities along South Main St. to improve safety and access.
Work has also started on SW 6th Street and city officials say improvements there will include better drainage systems and reduced traffic congestion.
“Other systems that we’re improving are the drainage systems as well as landscaping and streetscaping," Skinner said. Now streetscaping could be anything from new LED lighting to brick crosswalks. So its really going to improve that area and the flow of traffic.”
Both projects are expected to be complete by the end of this year.
