Fired Alachua County sheriff's deputy allowed to return to duty

A fired Alachua County Sheriff's deputy is allowed to return to work, the Career Service Appeals Board ruled Tuesday.

The board voted 3-2 to reinstate Deputy Clinton Ferguson after a five-day, unpaid suspension. He will also have 12 months probation, according to the sheriff's office.

Gainesville Police arrested Ferguson on child abuse charges in February but a judge dismissed the charge in June.

Sheriff Sadie Darnell fired Ferguson last month anyway after she said an internal investigation found criminal conduct.

Under the Career Service Act, Ferguson requested a Career Service Appeals Board hearing.

Ferguson has been with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office since November 1999.
