Florida Highway Patrol trooper was killed on I-75 in Alachua County Saturday night

A 30-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol died Saturday night after he was struck by a vehicle while working a crash on I-75 in Alachua County.

Master Sgt. William Trampas Bishop died from his injuries, the Highway Patrol said in a statement.

Chief Mark Brown said Bishop was hit around 6:30 p.m. while outside of his patrol car on the southbound side of the interstate near mile marker 404. He said the crash is still under investigation.

"We ask everybody to please keep the Bishop family and the Florida Highway Patrol in their thoughts and prayers," Brown said.

Bishop is survived by a wife and a son.

"Anybody that has been near Trampas knows he's an amazing man and he's dedicated his life to service and he's going to be sorely missed," Brown said.

He urged motorists to slow down and move over when they see emergency crews on the side of the road.

"We all have a heavy heart. Every time we go out there we know this can happen," Brown said.
