Gainesville Fire Rescue will soon retire one of its older fire station and welcome the new "Station One."

The new Station One will continue to serve as the city's largest station. It will be built on South Main Street, not far from the original station built in 1962.

Chief Jeff Lane said the station will continue to serve the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods, adding new equipment and expanding future capabilities.

"From the Power District to the Depot Avenue to even further going west to join with the University of Florida and our vibrant downtown, this is a landmark building that's much more than this block of dirt and these bricks and mortars that it will be constructed from," Lane said. "This station, too, will start off a journey of revitalization and new life for this whole district and this whole community that we will be a part of."

The new station is expected to be up and running by early next year.
