Gainesville man dies after vehicle strikes motorized shopping cart

A 47-year-old man died Friday after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in a motorized shopping cart, Gainesville Police say.

Police say John Christopher Shealy was struck about 4:40 a.m. Friday at the corner of NE 12th Avenue and NE Waldo Road. Capt. Jorge Campos said Shealy was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Campos said Shealy was attempting to cross Waldo Road when he was struck by a vehicle traveling north.

It is the second death involving an individual motorized vehicle this week.

Police say an 84-year-old man died Wednesday while riding his motorized tricycle in the curb lane of East University Avenue. Officers say William C. Thomas was eastbound when he lost control of the tricycle and hit the pavement.

Police say there was no indication he was wearing a helmet or another vehicle was involved.

Gainesville Police is investigating both crashes. Anyone who witnessed either crash, and has not been contacted by officers, is asked to call police at (352) 393-7745.
