Gainesville Police find crystal meth, stolen credit cards during traffic stop

Taylor Jose Clark Ruiz/Alachua County Jail

A South Carolina man is behind bars in Alachua County after police say he was caught driving on I-75 with a bag of meth and credit cards he stole from people's mail boxes.

Gainesville Police charged 23-year-old Taylor Jose Clark Ruiz of Greenville, SC with fraud, credit card theft and drug possession.

A police report released Thursday says a Gainesville Police officer pulled over a black Infiniti on I-75 for following another vehicle too closely.

The officer wrote in the report that the driver, Ruiz, was acting nervous and told the officer his license was suspended. Police say a dog alerted on the car and a search found a baggie of crystal meth in a purse that Ruiz said he bought 30 minutes earlier.

The officer reported he also found five credit cards that didn't belong to Ruiz. Police say Ruiz told officers he stole the credit cards from random people's mailboxes, activated them and used them.

Ruiz is being held on $20,000 bond.
