GPD Investigating Drive By Shooting

Drive By Shooting

A Gainesville man is recovering after being shot in the neck while inside his apartment Wednesday night.

Ofc. Ben Tobias of GPD, says, "We got a call reporting shots heard in the area of Phoenix apartments. And then a few minutes later, we had a call from one of the residents there, saying someone inside their apartment had been hit."

The victim, Samuel Staten, is expected to make a full recovery.

Police have found a couple of clear bullet holes in the side of the apartment building, yet no shell casings to be found. This information, along with surveillance footage obtained from a laundry mat across the street showing a suspicious car, is leading police to believe this is a drive by shooting.

UF and Santa Fe students live in one of the neighboring complexes, and a few saw law enforcement and first responders arrive on scene. One student, Victoria Johnson, says, "Twelve to fifteen cops, an ambulance, a fire truck over here. To get no alerts, and to live right down the street, it's pretty scary. What if someone's kids were down there you know? What if it was something different? It's just really terrifying not to know what happens right from your house."

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the case to come forward. The number for GPD's Crimestoppers is 352-372-7867.
