Official: Cargo destroyed in U.S. Mail truck headed to Tampa from Memphis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WGFL) —
All lanes of I-75 reopened just before noon today, hours after a U.S. Mail truck and another semi erupted into flames this morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol say the U.S. Mail truck and another semi collided around 3:30 a.m. near the 385 mile marker. Troopers say both semis crashed into the center median and caught fire. Three people suffered minor injuries.
The southbound lanes between the Newberry Road and Archer Road exits were closed for about eight hours as crews cleaned up the road way.
A spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said it's not been determined how much mail was being hauled by the truck. He said the truck was on its way from Memphis to Tampa, so the mail was not likely local. He said anyone who suspects their mail might have been lost on that truck in the coming weeks can file a claim at USPS.com.
Authorities say delays are still expected. The highway patrol says charges are pending.
