K-9 apprehends wanted suspect

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office K-9 team was called to action Sunday night.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a call about a suspicious person sneaking around the Fairbanks area with a flashlight.

Deputies said they found Lance Martin, a man wanted on outstanding warrants, trying to flee in a car.

A deputy was able to break the window of the car and tried to gain control of the situation. The Sheriff's Office said Martin continued to try to drive off, so they deployed the K-9 into the car.

"K-9's are extremely important," said Sgt. Chris Sims. "In this case, our deputies could have been run over by this vehicle, I mean the vehicle is a weapon. The K-9 was able to apprehend the suspect with very little injury to the suspect, as well as with no injuries to our deputies."

The Sheriff's Office said Martin sustained a minor injury to his left arm, and was taken to UF Health before being taken to the Alachua County Jail.
