A nine-foot-wide sinkhole swallowed part of a road Tuesday in Marion County.

Sheriff's deputies say the sinkhole opened up in the 300th block of East Highway 318 around 9 a.m. It's estimated to be about five-feet deep.

Marion County engineers closed the road and began repairs. Deputies say traffic is being detoured to 165th Street between Highway 441 and 301.

Authorities say they hope to have the hole filled by 5 p.m.
