One teen dead, another critically injured after Friday wreck in Alachua County

Dashboard video from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office shows a deputy and Good Samaritans attempting to save two teens in a crash on Friday.

A 17-year-old passenger died and a 19-year-old driver was critically injured in a wreck on U.S. Highway 27 Friday.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Laddie Dean Abel, a 17-year-old male from McAlpin, died at the scene.

Troopers say the driver, 19-year-old Jeremy Michael Dixon of Fort White, was critically injured in the crash.

A report says the teens were riding in a 1981 Chevrolet pickup heading south on U.S. 27 when it ran off the left side of the road. The report says the driver over-corrected, causing the truck to run off the right side of the road and into a tree.

Dixon was taken to University of Florida Shands Hospital in critical condition.

Joshua Catlett was one of the first people on the scene. He said he's thankful they were able to help one of the teens.

"My adrenaline was up, just for the fact that these were two young boys and I have a younger daughter about their age, she's 22," Catlett said. "So I was just trying to help them in any way I could. So I was running around trying to find something to help get the door open with. Luckily this guy stopped, and said I have a saw, a battery powered saw, would it help? So that's what I actually cut the door open with to get the driver out, was a battery power saw."

The crash remains under investigation.
