Alachua County Sheriff's deputies to protect and serve -- ice cream

Alachua County Sheriff's Office youth and community unit has something "sweet" planned for the community that kicks off this summer, just in time to cool things down.

Operation C.O.N.E., Community Outreach Neighborhood Engagement, a new initiative created to build bonds with local youth and melt away the stigma attached to law enforcement.

"Seeing that inside a uniform is a person a personality, a human being," Sheriff Sadie Darnell said. "And to be able to build those relationships an build upon that dialogue that we've been doing for almost two years now."

Sergeant Paul Pardue says, "We need to reestablish our trust in the neighborhoods and that's is a great way to do it."

The truck seems bare now, but kids 12 and younger can submit designs to a contest to have art featured on the vehicle. To submit a design you can get more information at any Sun State Federal Credit Union, Magic 101.3 radio station or contact the Sheriff's office.

Operation C.O.N.E. plans to hit the streets Thursday, June 22.
