GHS and P.K. Yonge hoops win, Buchholz soccer loses regional game
The end of January is an exciting time in high school sports: post-season is soon approaching and every win means that much more. There was plenty of action in the area Thursday night.
At the Purple Palace, Gainesville beat Vanguard, 51-48, to win the No. 1 seed and hosting rights for the district tournament. The Hurricanes improve to 19-2, and the Knights fall to 15-7.
In a cross-town rivalry, P.K. Yonge defeated Eastside, 59-53. Point guard Byron Smith led the Blue Wave with 25 points.
In varsity girls hoops, Tiffany Johnson's 14 points led Buchholz to a 49-42 victory against Santa Fe.
The Gainesville girls basketball team defeated The Rock, 44-43, after a last-chance shot failed to fall for the Lions at the buzzer.
In Region 2-3A soccer, Eastside girls fell to Deltona Pine Ridge, 2-0. The Rams finish the season with a 16-3-1 record.
In Region 1-5A soccer, Buchholz fell to Palm Coast in a double-overtime thriller, 2-1. Maclaine Thornqvist scored the Bobcat's only goal.
