15-year-old Trenton boy dies in Alachua County crash
NEWBERRY, Fla. (WGFL) —
A 15-year-old boy died Friday after an SUV ran off the road and struck a utility pole.
The Florida Highway Patrol says six people were riding in a 2007 Ford Explorer that was headed south on SW 296th Street near Newberry at about 4:20 p.m.
Troopers say the 39-year-old driver, Billy Pumphrey, lost control of the SUV, causing it to cross the highway, strike a utility pole and flip over several times. Pumphrey was taken to UF Health with serious injuries.
Troopers say 15-year-old Damon Michael Pumphrey died at the scene. Four other teens in the vehicle, ranging from 16 to 18 years old, all escaped without injury.
The crash is under investigation.
