$3 million Southwest 6th Street project complete
On Thursday night, the city of Gainesville hosted a celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the southwest sixth street project.
The $3.3 million-dollar project started in 2017 as a part of the larger project of transforming east Gainesville.
Improvements on southwest 6th street include a roundabout for reduced traffic congestion, bike lanes and enhanced safety for pedestrians.
District one commissioner Gig Simmons said the SW 6th street project is just one of four projects aimed at transforming the overall look and feel of east Gainesville.
" We're actively starting to do work and work our way east. So, you have those projects like SE 4th and South Main coming up and so all of that's is going to interconnect as you move towards southeast Gainesville so you have that connectivity,” Simmons said.
The improved 6th street corridor will also provide a link between many historic neighborhoods and businesses.
