Authorities say the pilot of a small plane died after the plane crashed in Dixie County.

The Dixie County Sheriff's Office says investigators believe the pilot's name is William Greehaw of Alabama.

Authorities say the Beachcraft Bonanza departed Gadsden, Ala. for Melbourne, Fla. on Wednesday but didn't file a flight plan. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center notified Dixie County authorities on Thursday that the plane's last known location was over Dixie County.

Deputies started searching the area but had to call it off Thursday because of heavy fog. Dixie County Emergency Management's drone found the damaged plane around 10 a.m. Friday on a private hunting club northwest of Cross City. The pilot was found dead, deputies say.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
