Former Alachua County teacher wins Commissioner race with flying colors
A three-way race for Alachua County Commissioner turned out to be a runaway.
Democrat Marihelen Wheeler easily wins the seat over Independent Scott Costello and Libertarian Gregory Caudill.
The 67-year-old former teacher made education and the environment priorities in her campaign.
Her win makes her the only woman on the commission.
“As a candidate, it has been really exciting to be on the front lines of all of this,” says Wheeler. “To come in tonight with such a decisive win, with so many people who believed that I could do this job—it has been really thrilling, exciting and also humbling.”
According to the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Unofficial Results, Wheeler won by 65.06%, totaling to 68,372 votes.
