Alachua County Sheriff's deputy rescues driver from car submerged in Paynes Prairie
The Alachua County Sheriff's Office says a deputy rescued a man from a sinking car after it drove into Paynes Prairie early Saturday morning.
Deputies responded to the northbound lanes of I-75 around 4:35 a.m. after callers told dispatchers a car driving in the wrong direction went off the interstate and into Paynes Prairie, Sgt. Chris Sims said. He said deputies found the driver on top of his vehicle, asking for help, as the vehicle sank into the water.
Sims said Deputy Jason Hulst removed his gear and swam through the prairie waters, rescuing the driver before the vehicle sank. Divers pulled the car from the water the next day.
