Gainesville, Fla. -- City commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance banning plastic bags and Styrofoam on Thursday.
The ban will go into effect on August 1 and includes plastic bags from grocery and retail stores as well as restaurants.
Styrofoam cups, plates and carry out containers will also be banned.
Commissioners say the goal is to limit the use of items that are harmful to the environment and encourage citizens to use recyclable replacements.
" Its hard to imagine now, but we will notice an improvement in our community once August 1 comes. We will immediately notice a difference,” Mayor Lauren Poe said.
Merchants have until August 1 to replace plastic bags with a suitable alternative.
