Highway Patrol: Two Ocala women killed in I-75 crash Monday

Ocala Fire-Rescue provided these photos of a crash that killed two people near Ocala this afternoon.

Two Ocala women died after a four-vehicle crash on I-75 Monday that blocked the northbound lanes for hours.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. near Exit 350.

The Florida Highway Patrol says 28-year-old Monique Morrell, the driver of a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, died at the scene. A 22-year-old passenger in her car also died. The passenger's name was not immediately released pending notification of her family.

The Highway Patrol says Morrell drove onto I-75 northbound using the Exit 350 entrance ramp and continued north in the far-right lane. Troopers say the Volkswagen then crossed into the center lane, into the path of a Peterbilt semi. Troopers say the Peterbilt swerved to the left to try and avoid the Volkswagen but they collided, setting off a chain reaction involving a Nissan Rogue and a second semi.

Both women in the Volkswagen were pronounced dead at the scene. No one else involved in the wreck was injured.
