Florida Highway Patrol helps Alachua County families for Thanksgiving
Florida Highway Patrol and Bread of the Mighty Food Bank teamed up so that families in Alachua County can have food for the holiday season.
FHP Lieutenant Patrick Riordan said they have received a lot of food this year.
"What we do is we get employees as well as the public to donate food to our stations," Riordan said.
They are doing a food drive, that's a little different than most. It's called "Stuff the Charger" because the Florida Highway Patrol Chargers are filled with pounds of food.
These food items were taken to the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank today, and then distributed to local families in need this Thanksgiving.
Vernon Carter is the truck driver for Bread of the Mighty and has delivered food for many years.
"They will be very pleased with what they get because a lot of them will be really hungry...when they see our trucks they come out and give us a hand," he said.
Vernon said giving food to these families and seeing the smiles on their faces, gives him a feeling unlike any other.
"It feels really good to be doing something special for people who need food and it makes me feel proud that other people are helping out," he said.
The food drive is now over but you can donate to Bread of the Mighty Food Bank all year long.
