State and local authorities have identified found remains as those of a Gainesville woman who disappeared 27 years ago.

Police say 78-year-old Ella Mae Williams disappeared from SE 20th Street around 3:30 in the afternoon in March of 1990. Her daughter reported her missing but no one could find her.

The remains were discovered 11 years later on SE 28th Place on March 21, 2001 after some children brought a skull home.

The Gainesville Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff's Office weren't immediately able to confirm that the remains were those of Williams. Now they have with the help of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

They say analysts compared DNA patterns from the remains with patterns of family members. Statistically they've been linked.

Authorities said Thursday they don't suspect foul play, noting she had dementia at the time of her disappearance, but they're still doing tests to try and confirm her cause of death.

“After 27 years, Ms. Williams’ family can lay her to rest,” FDLE Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge John Burke said. “Thanks to our agents, lab analysts, Alachua County SO and Gainesville PD for working to resolve this case and provide answers to her family.”
