Gainesville police say they arrested a man on drug charges Saturday after he led them on a chase.

Police charged 22-year-old Javontea Antonio Black with grand theft, cocaine possession and fleeing from police.

Officers say Black was driving a silver Honda Civic, which was stolen out of Hillsborough County in July. When an officer spotted the car Saturday, they say it turned south on Northwest 23rd Terrace. Police attempted to stop the car but they say it kept going.

The vehicle then attempted to drive between two buildings and struck a mailbox causing about $100 in damages. Once the vehicle stopped, the front and back seat passenger took off running. Police say Black, the driver, tried to exit through the front passenger side window but was taken into custody. A report says he had 3.3 grams of crack and 6.6 grams of powder cocaine.

Police say Black already had active warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and elderly abuse.

He's being held at the Alachua County Jail on $305,000 bond.
