Gainesville Police identify man stabbed to death in apartment, charge roommate with murder
Gainesville Police have arrested a man accused of stabbing his roommate to death Thursday.
Investigators charged 57-year-old Ronald Cannon of 2101 NE 2nd St. with first-degree murder in the death of 61-year-old Jon Hughes.
An incident report released Friday says Cannon called a witness at 4:06 p.m. and told the witness he killed his roommate at their apartment at Choice Apartments. Officers entered the apartment and found the Hughes' body with multiple stab wounds.
Investigators say Hughes was likely lying in his bed when he was first stabbed, and later found lying on the floor in the fetal position next to the bed.
Investigators say they found Cannon about three hours later, at a tent site about seven miles away. The report says Cannon admitted to stabbing Hughes after he said Hughes struck him in the head with a golf club, choked him and tried to gouge his eyes out. Cannon told investigators he stabbed Hughes with a large kitchen knife because Hughes pulled out a knife first. He told investigators he had no choice but to kill him.
"When asked where he stabbed the (victim), (Cannon) stated, 'anywhere I could, whatever it took.'" the report says.
