Gainesville police arrest Newberry Christian School student accused of making threats
Gainesville Police arrested a 17-year-old private school student Friday after they say he made threats to the school Thursday.
Police say students at Newberry Christian Community School told administrators Friday that they heard the student make violent threats. The school contacted police, who spoke with the student and learned he was carrying a folding pocket knife. He was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Officer Ben Tobias said detectives are investigating the validity of the threat. Because of the student's mental status, Tobias said officers used the Florida Baker Act to take him to a mental health facility. The Baker Act allows for him to be confined for three days. His charges will be process if and when he is released from the facility. For now his name has not been released.
The student is one of three North Central Florida students arrested on charges of making threats Friday.
