A Gainesville Police Officer was taken to UF Health after a car crash in Gainesville late last night.

The incident happened Wednesday around 10 p.m. at the intersection of NW 16th Ave. and NW 34 St.

Officer Tom Brinsko is being treated for a concussion and possible broken bones.

Officials say his marked patrol car was hit while driving through an intersection after the other driver ran a red light.

The patrol car was hit on the passenger side.

There is damage to both vehicles and they were towed from the scene.

The other driver was uninjured and given a citation for running a red light. That person's name has not been released.

"The driver of the vehicle was issued a citation for running a red light and it's just a somber reminder that traffic crashes can happen anywhere, any time, to any person," Gainesville Police Officer Ben Tobias said.
