Gainesville Police: One man wounded, second in jail after Main Street shooting

Dantae Flagg/Alachua County Jail

Gainesville police have a man in custody after a second man was shot five times on Main Street early this morning.

Police arrested and charged 23-year-old Dantae Flagg with attempted first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Officer Ben Tobias said officers were covering the downtown bar closings around 2 a.m. when they heard gunfire coming from 200 S. Main St.

Tobias said officers were on scene within seconds and found 34-year-old David Williams lying on the sidewalk at SE 3rd Place and South Main Street with five gunshot wounds. Tobias said Williams is expected to survive.

Witnesses told officers they followed the suspects to St. Francis House at 400 S. Main St. Tobias said that's where officers found three men getting into a vehicle. He said they also found the weapon in the courtyard of the St. Francis House.

Tobias said witnesses also told officers what led to the fight: The victim was in a vehicle that had turned south onto Main Street and SE 2nd Avenue and exchanged words with the suspects, who were walking. Tobias said they came across each other again on SE 2nd Place when Williams, who was a backseat passenger, got out of the vehicle to argue with the suspects.

Tobias said witnesses told investigators that's when Flagg shot Williams.

Flagg's bond had not been set as of Sunday morning.
