Ocala Police: 16-year-old West Port High School student had stolen handgun in his backpack
Ocala Police say they've arrested a 16-year-old West Port High School student accused of carrying a stolen gun to school Wednesday.
Police say a student told the school resource officer the sophomore had a gun. The officer found the student, removed him from class and, police say, found an unloaded, Hi-Point .380-caliber pistol in his backpack, as well as a loaded magazine.
Police say the gun was reported stolen out of Suwannee County.
The student is charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, possession of a firearm by a person under 19, possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
The school was put on Code Yellow for part of the day.
Police say a report of a gun inside a second student's vehicle turned out to be unfounded.
School officials say they didn't release any information to parents until after school because of the police department's investigation.
