A new health care facility in Alachua is making it easier for women to get mental and emotional support before and after a pregnancy.

Lauren DePaola, founder and CEO of Better Beginnings said the facility is the first of its kind in Florida.

"Our whole purpose was to make it really visible and normalize the conversation around mental health in this time period,” DePaola said.

It offers a variety of services like educational classes and counseling for pregnant and post-partum women.

"It’s just as important to take care of our emotional and mental health as it is the health of mom's body and developing baby during pregnancy,” DePaola said.

Depaola said the stigma surrounding postpartum depression, lack of awareness and the need for childcare are often roadblocks for women getting the right care.

Better beginnings aims to break down these barriers by providing an outpatient mother baby program that includes psychiatric care and on site nursery services.

"Moms come five days a week and we have an onsite nursery where the baby can come and groups are involved during that day as well as individual counseling and psychiatry services."
