'Old Joe' Confederate statue in Gainesville comes down
Alachua County officials have removed the Old Joe Confederate statue from in front of the administration building today, just days after a white nationalist rally over a monument in Charlottesville erupted in violence.
County commissioners voted to remove the statue back in May under mounting pressure from people who feel the statue represent white supremacy. Commissioners say the fact it's coming down today, just days after the violence in Charlottesville, is a coincidence.
Meanwhile, the city of Gainesville and the University of Florida are already preparing in case white nationalist Richard Spencer speaks at the university next month.
Gainesville Police say they're aware of multiple blogs and forums spreading on social media about the event. They say they're working with UF campus police and federal officials to prepare for possible protests and counter-protests.
