Police arrest Gainesville man accused of trying to rob man outside apartment

Titus Smoaks/Alachua County Jail

Gainesville Police arrested a 44-year-old man they say tried to rob a man outside of his apartment late Thursday.

Officers responded at 11 p.m. to a report of a robbery at 4121 SW 31st Dr. The victim told police he was returning to his apartment after walking his dog when a man with a machine-gun-style firearm approached him.

A report released Friday says the suspect demanded the victim tie the dog up to the nearest tree. The victim told police he dropped the dog's leash and jumped a 4-foot chain link fence and ran away.

Officer investigating the scene say a witness told them they saw a man hiding beside a car just a few houses down. When an officer and his K-9 approached the suspect, the suspect ran. The officer warned the man he would release the dog the man stopped.

Officers charged Titus Smoaks of Gainesville with armed robbery and resisting arrest.

Police say they also found two latex gloves and two large boxes of cannabis in the area. The report says they're investigating whether the cannabis came from the victim's apartment.

Police say they also found a gun which matched the description the victim gave.

Police say the investigation is still active and they anticipate more charges in the future.
