Police say man goes to GPD saying he wants to kill the chief
Police say 35-year-old Joseph Roberts barged into the Gainesville Police Department with a knife and scissors exclaiming he wants to kill the chief.
“He keeps putting his hands in his pockets and raising them up,” says Cpt. Jorge Campos, Gainesville Police Department spokesman.
Police say Roberts thought police were spying on him
“He has made complaints at the department before where he believed that there was some type of task force that was electronically surveilling him,” says Cpt. Jorge Campos.
Gainesville Police Department says they don’t have any task force that Roberts described.
“His allegations were unfounded,” says Cpt. Jorge Campos.
Police say after multiple attempts of trying to calm Roberts down, they say he still took out weapons—and that’s when they tased him.
“Based on the comments he was making and his beliefs we do suspect there is something else going on and he needs to be further evaluated,” says Cpt. Jorge Campos.
Roberts is in the Alachua County Jail and charged with three counts of aggravated assault to a police officer and resisting an officer.
