15-year-old girl accused of leading Alachua County deputies on chase in stolen car
A morning patrol turned into a high-speed pursuit Saturday morning.
Dashcam footage of Alachua County Sheriff Deputies show them trying to wake up a 15-year-old girl who—they say, was sleeping in a stolen Honda Civic.
When she woke up, officials say opening the door was not an option.
“Rather than get out of a car and give up, the driver actually started the vehicle and took off,” says Art Forgey, from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
It was a quick pursuit down 39th avenue when the driver suddenly drove onto the opposite side of the road.
“What she did was very concerning, she could have simply given up right there with no damage to the vehiclesand would have gotten in a lot less trouble,” says Forgey.
The driver, Janae Gwendolyn Morant was taken to the Alachua County juvenile detention center, where she is now facing several felony charges including grand theft, aggravated assault and resisting without violence.
