A 15-year-old Trenton girl was rushed to UF Health Saturday after troopers say she was thrown from an ATV while riding on the Nature Coast State Trail.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash was reported at 4:53 p.m. along the trail in Gilchrist County.

Troopers say the teen was riding west on the grassy shoulder of the trail when she lost control of the 2004 Yamaha Kodiak ATV and it overturned across the trail.

A Highway Patrol report says the driver, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries when she was tossed from the vehicle.

She was taken to UF Health in serious condition. The crash is under investigation.

Florida law says no one under the age of 16 should operate an all-terrain vehicle unless the person wears a safety helmet meeting U.S. Department of Transportation standards.

The crash is at least the second serious crash involving an ATV and an underage driver. On Jan. 20th, 9-year-old Kimberly Morales was critically injured when the ATV she was driving overturned and pinned her beneath it. She was pronounced dead days later.

The Florida Highway Patrol report says it was not known if Morales was wearing a helmet at the time of her crash.
