Wanted Wednesdays: Gainesville Police need help finding man wanted for multiple thefts

Police are looking for a man accused of constantly stealing from Gainesville businesses and they need your help to find him.

Jesse Charles Smith is wanted on charges of grand theft, petty theft, dealing in stolen property, fraud and two counts of pawnbroker transaction fraud

“This individual has been a prior inmate at the Alachua county jail no less than three times and has also been featured on our most wanted before, so we’d like to ask the public to lend us a hand again,” says Sgt. Brett Rhodenzier, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Smith’s latest crime—is not one police have seen often.

“It was a pretty unique way he chose to commit crimes,” says Ofc. Ben Tobias, from the Gainesville Police Department. “He would go to the Lowes improvement store and select drills—for some reason he really likes power drills. He would take those drills to the garden center and throw it over the fence, drive around to the back of the business, pick them up, and drive straight to a pawn shop.”

Police say smith did this at least twice, but it came to a halt when he was approached by a loss prevention officer in the parking lot.

“When he went to confront him outside of the store that’s when Mr. Smith decided to drive his vehicle towards the loss prevention officer causing him to move out of the way,” says Ofc. Tobias.

Now Smith is on the run.

“He has been arrested in the Gainesville area and neighboring counties before, so we’d like everyone to take a good look at his photo, he’s a very unique individual and he is prolific prior offender that we’d like their help with in apprehending,” says Sgt. Brett Rhodenzier.
