WANTED WEDNESDAY: Man accused of stealing $200,000-plus from Alachua County homes
For this week’s Wanted Wednesday, we bring you a man who is wanted nationwide, and law enforcement is asking for your help to find him.
Deputies say 49-year-old Efren Medina has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Alachua county homes alone, but surveillance video shows he is not working alone.
Deputies say they identified Medina through DNA found inside a glove left at one of the burglaries.
“Foreign nationals were targeted,” said Art Forgey with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. “That was their target and they would force entries into the home, stealing cash and jewelry.”
Investigators say the burglars target those of Asian or Indian descent.
“Simply because they thought that they would find more things of cash value there at those homes,” Forgey said. “A lot of these were business owners. They felt like they would have a more lucrative target by targeting them.”
They say they then linked him to multiple Alachua County burglaries from November 2017 to February based on the methods used to enter homes.
Deputies say the crew would wait a week or two between burglaries to strike again.
The most recent burglary was in July.
“Just because we haven’t seen a burglary recently, we can’t discount they are not still here and doing this type of activity,” Forgey said. “They had a very lucrative run while they were here.”
Medina is wanted on charges of burglary, grand theft and property damage.
Medina is a 5’7 black male with short black hair. He is believed to be from Houston, Texas.
